Outspoken socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., punted when asked whether she supports Venezuela’s socialist president or its opposition leader, the latter who incited this week’s military uprising in the chaotic country.

“Violence is horrible,” Ocasio-Cortez told National Review.

She was then asked who the United States should support, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro or opposition leader Juan Guaidó.

Ocasio-Cortez responded by saying she would “defer to caucus leadership on how we navigate this.”

The U.S. and dozens of other nations recognize Guaidó as the legitimate leader in Venezuela. Russia, China, Cuba, and others are on Maduro’s side.

Maduro nearly fled to Cuba on Tuesday before Russia talked him out of doing so. Violent clashes between the military and protesters have broken out in Venezuela’s capital Caracas this week.
