Court officer with U.S. Marshals SHOT at Federal Courthouse in Phoenix

A court security officer working for the U.S. Marshals Service was shot in the vest in a drive-by shooting at the Sandra Day O’Connor U.S. Courthouse in Phoenix, Arizona a short time ago.

The shooting was at around 11:30 am local time (that’s 2:30 eastern).

The FBI is investigating this as an assault on a federal officer.

The Star-Tribune says that “court security officers work under the direction of the U.S. Marshals Service but generally are employed by private security companies,” although the FBI is referring to person who was shot as a federal officer.

The officer was hit in the protective vest and the injuries are not life threatening.

Coming so soon after the weekend horror in Compton this will certainly see a lot of scrutiny with regard to motive. Considering it was a drive-by and directed at the closest law enforcement figure, it’s not hard to imagine what may have been behind the attack.
