‘Atypically High’ Levels Of Fever With Flu-Like Symptoms Detected In Florida

A surge in seasonal illness linked to fever – specifically ‘influenza-like illness’ – has been observed in Florida, according to a ‘US Health Weather Map’ provided by smart thermometer manufacturer Kinsa in collaboration with Oregon State University. The map uses anonymized data from users to flag “anomalously high” cases by comparing it to expected seasonal flu trends (read more here).

The map shows two key data points: (1) the illness levels we’re currently observing, and (2) the degree to which those levels are higher than the typical levels we expect to see at this point in the flu season. (Details on how we calculate this are available in our technical approach document.) We believe this latter data point — which we’re calling “atypical illness”, may in some cases be connected to the COVID-19 pandemic.Healthweather.us

Kinsa says in a disclaimer that they are “not stating that this data represents COVID-19 activity. However we would expect to pick up higher-than-anticipated levels of flu-like symptoms in our data in areas where the pandemic is affecting large numbers of people.”

Florida notably has a shortage of test kits, and is limiting COVID-19 testing to those who have been referred by their doctor based on CDC guidelines.

“I think to be perfectly honest the amount of supplies that were needed have caught everyone off guard,” said Carmen Wiley, Chief Medical Officer for the Veravas, a laboratory medicine company. “We have to use the materials we have judiciously.”

  1. No surprise Florida has this particular problem. My doc said 99° is a fever in older adults, so it could be that these are senior citizens with 101° which would be really high for them.

  2. Influenza virus can mutate on their own. What started in Washington could be something different by the time it reaches Florida. America has flu viruses that descend from the Spanish Flu still floating around. It’s in the air, survives on surfaces, and can hibernate until conditions allow it to recuperate and mutate again.
The amount of travel, shipping and consumerism is part of the transmission venue. Sick workers breath on packing materials and items being shipped, or pack cardboard boxes in one hot-spot, then a day or two later the virus is in another local infecting others. It’s compounded over-and-over.
All the crowded areas are affected by significance of it’s population, as in Florida with their senior retirement communities, or New York City with its tight living spaces and high-rise apartment buildings.
The demonrat media has been calling for everyone to disrespect and disbelieve the President for years. It’s no wonder the citizens in some areas are disregarding warnings about the virus to a point where transmissions are escalating.

  3. If memory serves me, it seems I remember that Florida was one of the locations which the hold over Obama medical chief allowed to accept a boatload of people, many of which were known to have COVID-19 (the other was San Francisco). If you look at the way the virus spreads, exponentially, a few sick people coming in on a boat (cruise ship) could very quickly lead to hundreds of cases of the virus. Trump said any such ships were to disembark and every individual on the boat was to be tested and every individual on the boat was to be quarantined for fourteen days, but he was overruled by the Obama lackey. But, the media reports what a terrible job Trump is doing. Go figure.
