The U.S. Department of Justice on Saturday released 500 pages of interview summaries and emails related to former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report detailing Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election, after a court battle with BuzzFeed News.
The documents, some of which were posted by the online news outlet, include summaries of FBI interviews with Rick Gates, U.S. president Donald Trump’s former deputy campaign chair, and Steve Bannon, the former presidential adviser.
The documents also include email correspondence between Bannon and Jared Kushner, Trump’s senior advisor and son-in-law, as well as a “proposal to obtain” and analyze emails belonging to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, which was sent to Bannon by a conservative activist.
BuzzFeed filed a Freedom of Information Act request seeking all documents related to the investigation by former FBI director Mueller, and a lawsuit to get access to the documents
The Department Of Justice did not want the paper released and argued that the billions of pages involved could take centuries.
But the judge at the hearing decided not to side with the DOJ and ruled that the documents would have to be produced.
“It shouldn’t fall on the backs of the citizens to wait years to find out what the government is up to,” US District Court Judge Reggie Walton.
Buzzfeed, who brought the case to get the documents, issued a statement via its attorney celebrating the victory.
“The reason we have a Freedom of Information Act is to make sure that the government is accountable to the people,” attorney Matt Topic said.
He said people would be powerless “to determine whether the government is telling us the truth or lying to us, whether it is playing favorites or playing fair, whether, as the president claims.
“The Justice Department engaged in an illegal, treasonous witch hunt or, as others have claimed, the president engaged in obstruction of justice and was given a free pass by the attorney general,” he said.
