Hillary Clinton praised Twitter’s decision to ban all political advertising and is challenging Facebook to do the same after it said it would not fact check ads on its platform.
“This is the right thing to do for democracy in America and all over the world,” the 2016 Democratic presidential candidate said on Twitter. “What say you, @Facebook?”
Twitter said Wednesday that it was banning the ads because social media companies gave advertisers an unfair advantage in proliferating highly targeted, misleading messages.
The service’s decision follows congressional testimony last week by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg that politicians had the right to free speech on Facebook — and, therefore, would not fact-check ads by politicians or their campaigns.
Facebook has come under strong attack since its announcement earlier this month, with critics saying the move could allow politicians to lie freely through their ads.
In September, Twitter, Facebook and Google refused to remove a misleading video ad from President Donald Trump’s campaign that targeted former Vice President and 2020 Democratic candidate Joe Biden.
But hours before Twitter’s announcement, Clinton bashed Facebook on the ad policy.
“Facebook’s decision to allow false information in political advertisements is appalling,” the former secretary of state tweeted. “Voters are being confronted by millions of pieces of misinformation.
“A world where up is down and down is up is a world where democracy can’t thrive.”
