After Multiple Reports About New Zealanders Turning In Guns, Guess How Many Actually Did It?

Following reports that a flood of New Zealand gun owners have been voluntarily surrending their firearms in the wake of last Friday’s Christchurch mosque attack that left 50 dead, the numbers are in on how many Kiwis actually handed over their weapons.

Out of an estimated 1.2 million registered guns, New Zealand police report that as of Tuesday night, 37 firearms have been surrendered nationwide, according to BuzzFeed.

No accounting was provided of how many people owned those guns, the types of firearms, or where they were surrendered.

The reports of citizens disarming themselves come after a Monday announcement by Prime minister Jacinda Ardern that several “in principle decisions” on gun control have been made by Cabinet ministers, and has praised residents who have surrendered their guns to police.

So far, we know of four people who have; Green Party member John Hart and longtime gun owner “@SirWB” - who each turned in a rifle, a grandmother who goes by the Twitter handle “@FeyHag” who said she requested for her family’s guns to be handed in for destruction, and former New Zealand Army soldier Pete Breidahl - who said he warned local police of extremists at a local rifle club where he said he suspected the shooter was a member.

“All I want is to go back to my horses, say goodbye to firearms and the bullshit shooting community and its drama and let the police and government sort this one out,” wrote Breidahl in a Facebook post. “I don’t NEED, want or care about guns. I can happily live my life without them.”

Most reports cited three tweets, including that of John Hart, a farmer and Green Party member from Wairarapa, who told BuzzFeed News he surrendered his semiautomatic rifle two days after the attack.

He tweeted a photo of the form he signed to hand over his rifle to the police to be destroyed, saying, “We don’t need these in our country. We have to make sure it’s #NeverAgain.” -BuzzFeed

Ardern asked residents to surrender their weapons on Monday.

“To make our community safer, the time to act is now,” she said. “I want to remind people, you can surrender your gun to the police at any time. In fact I have seen reports that people are in fact already doing this. I applaud that effort, and if you are thinking about surrendering your weapon, I would encourage you to do so.”

Looks like that was wishful thinking on the part of the Prime Minister.

  1. Law abiding citizens and gun owners are not the ones committing the crimes. Criminals will use guns, knives, cars, anything they need to carry out their deranged ideas or fantasies. What item will be banned next?

        • First they banned smoking in the eating area..bar only, then they banned smoking at the bar.Smoke outside , then they said no smoking within fifty feet. First they demanded everyone registered their weapons, then they banned magazines of over ten rounds, then they ….they do whatever their want one cut at a time.

          • Welcome to the Democratic party, the only people dumb enough to disarm good citizens so criminals are the only ones with guns. Wow and yes you can’t smoke but they will give you antidepressants.

          • Smoking is a very poor analogy, considering that smoking violates the rights of non-smokers to breathe clean-er air! Banning smoking happened because the majority of smokers refused to show any consideration to those who don’t smoke, it was “confirmed” that it and second-hand smoke causes cancer and other ailments, and because it caused even worse effects on children and people who suffer from respiratory illnesses. Owning a gun, in itself, harms NO ONE and doesn’t violate anyone else’s rights! By the way, all of my firearms are well behaved and have never shot anyone or anything on their own!

  5. Typical reporting - always has been this way - if there is a demonstration of 12 make it 1200 so it “sells” better ! Note how TV demonstrations are “cropped” and many times you never see a wide shot. So, the fact that less than 100 guns were turned in ( I’m being generous since it can work the other way in a biased article like this one ) it’s still a small number. I know it sounds cold but think
    about it - in America we have around 340,000,000 people. In the last 3-5 years we have had about
    that many major shootings which involved around 5 people out of 340 million. Not one talks about the fact that around a hundred people die in car wrecks every DAY ! Why is that ? A car it seems to me is far more likely to kill someone than a gun ?

  8. There are big differences between New Zealand and the USA when it comes to guns:
    1) We have the Second Amendment to the Constitution; they have NO such protection for gun owners or gun ownership. Their government can demand that gun owners surrender their weapons, and all the gun owners can do is comply OR break the law (and accept whatever penalties the government decides to impose on lawbreakers).
    2) They have a parliamentary style government, in which the party that won the last election is in TOTAL control of legislating until the next time the people vote (generally 5 years, but it CAN be less). The opposition party has no say in what the government does, and no capacity to alter legislation the government may propose. In other words, it’s an ELECTED DICTATORSHIP. (Note: Hitler came to power in Germany by winning one election, too.)

    • Actually, Hitler came to power when, as the leader of the National Socialists, he was appointed Chancellor by President Paul von Hindenburg. Hindenburg later died of natural causes (he was an old man), and Hitler, being the opportunist, “stepped up” to fill the vacancy of the Presidency, then consolidated both offices into one, calling himself “the Leader” (or “der Fuhrer” in German). He then (probably) arranged the burning of the Reichstag building, blamed the communists, and asked the Reichstag (who met in a temporary building) for Emergency Powers. They passed the “Enabling Act of 1933” and the rest is history.

If you are a criminal you will always be able to get a gun, but for those of us, who are law-abiding citizens it is a lot more difficult; and for the government to ask us to give up our rights to pacify them is a little STUPID to say the least.   20. Funny, no one seems to have any reports of criminals turning in their firearms. Wonder why? When we surrender our guns, we leave only those who don’t care about the law, in the first place, having guns. Then where is our safety? The police cannot stop the shootings now while hundreds, if not thousands, of crimes are thwarted by armed citizens, each year. Wake Up People, the gun is not the problem. It is the culture which values only what the individual wants and no one else, that is the problem.

Do they follow the Bible, the Quoran, or did they write a new book?Do they worship God, Jesus, Allah or do they have a new god? What law do they follow the ones in the Bible, the Quoran or did they make new laws? They have me confused. Help!

    • Only 37 stupid people turned in their guns ON THE FIRST DAY! And that probably understates the actual number. Of course, New Zealanders weren’t turning in ALL their guns, only their assault-style weapons.
